Diving & Fly-Fishing In The Seychelles

indian ocean explorer

The Indian Ocean Explorer was built in 1956 in Hamburg as an oceanographic research vessel destined for the North Sea. In 1997 it was completely rebuilt as an ocean-going dive boat. Since Summer 1998, The Indian Ocean Explorer has been cruising the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean.

Our trained, professional crew caters to the needs of our guests. The 35 meter long boat offers 7 double cabins for a maximum of 14 persons. With a large, partially shaded sun deck, relax and enjoy this live-aboard cruise experience.

DIVING

Inner Island- The northernmost islands of the Seychelles, including all the the granite islands, are known as the Inner Islands. To these belong Mahé with the capital city Victoria as well as the islands of Praslin and La Digue, much admired by visitors for their many protected natural and birding reserves. Although some areas of the Northen Inner Islands offer full-time dive operations and regularly dived sites, these constitute only a tiny proportion of the diving available in this area. Most of the best sites are out of range of shore-based dayboats.

Amirantes & Alphonse - The chain of coral islands forming the Amirantes is centered on the central African Banks, St. Jospeh, Poivre and Desroches. The African Banks lie closest to the granite Northern Inner Islands being 235 km distance from Mahé. The 25 islands in this group together form part of a natural atoll. The diving here is rich and varied, including caves to steep walls on the "Desroches Drop" and a visit to the rays at Poivre Reef.

Aldabra/Mahe Explorer - The Aldabra Explorer Cruise lasts 13 days and begins either in Mahé ending at Aldabra or the reverse. An initial orientation dive is made at Mahé. Then we sail on to Desroches to dive off its impressive wall. The trip continues on to Alphonse, Bijoutier, St. Pierre and Astove. A fascinating underwater world filled with every imaginable colour and a wealth of marine life awaits us at every turn. On the eighth day we reach Cosmoledo where we meet an entirely new population of undersea denizens during a night dive. Our lamps allow a fleeting glimpse of animals swimming quickly away from the bright beams. Somewhere out in the dark depths we sense an eery, unknown presence ... then att last, ALDABRA is in sight! Aldabra with its enormous lagoon where a drift-dive will result in unforgettable impressions and memories.

Aldabra Expeditions - Aldabra! An island group whose very name evokes magical images. Located 1150 km southwest of Mahé, this atoll designated as aWorld Heritage Site is home to an incredible number of giant Indian Ocean tortoises and huge colonies of sea birds. Because of its protected nature, numerous types of rare and native plant and animal species can be found here in their natural surroundings.
